20th century Fox and Fuzzy Doors Productions jointly ventured for a new animated series called “The Cleveland Show”. The animation tells us about an African American family. The main idea of the story is of Mr. Seth MacFarlane whose other animation creations are Family Guy and American Dad. But unlike the other series Cleveland deals the affairs of a family of black people. In the story we can see that a divorced middle aged black American called Cleveland Brown is shifting his base to California with his only 14 year old son, Cleveland Jr. On his way he meets with Donna whom he was in love with at high school. Cleveland found Donna in Virginia in a fictional town called Stoolbend. Singlehandedly Donna is raising two children. Her teenage daughter Roberta and 5 year old son Rallo. Cleveland marries Donna and starts to live with her.
MacFarlane has shown the image of average middle aged suburban American men in the character of Cleveland. He has become sluggish and culturally shocked in the present age. He can’t articulate himself properly to the present generation and finds it very hard to raise up his 14 year old son.
Although the center part of the animation is a black family but still the main point focused here is not racism. Nor the creators try to show all the black people as all square good human beings. Here good people with good qualities and common people with flaws in their nature are depicted clearly as we can find in the real world. The moral subjects are dealt with a direct approach sometimes in a very wrong way so that the audience find the animation hilarious.
More or less each character of Cleveland has a specialty. Lester is a toothless gun lover who resides next to Cleveland and answers every knock on his door by saying that he knows that a black man has been elected as the president of USA. Donna’s teenage daughter Roberta has the habit of saying “That ain’t The View” if someone asks her how she had spend the day. The 5 year old boy Rello seems to be an inborn talent of delivering double standard dialogues. The show has a talking bear. The voice of Jason Sudekis is used for the bear.
The particular thing that makes this show different from any other MacFarlane animation is the jokes. They fly directly and relentlessly towards the audience. You can get it or miss it but the next one is ready for you. This will be a delight to animation lovers.
